Honoring My Mom with "Give $5. Take 5."

Hello! I am Mary Lester with AListBaby.net. It is an honor to be asked to guest blog on ShareYourPower!

Mother's Day weekend is upon us! And I have to admit, this year is bittersweet, as this is my first Mother's Day without my Mom.

My mother was a compassionate nurse for more than 30 years, and she believed, more than anything, in the importance of proper medical care. So instead of buying flowers and presents for my Mom this year, I am going to honor her with the "Give $5. Take 5." program, which helps support the YW Nurse-Family Partnership. Not everyone has access to proper prenatal care, and this program pairs a new mother with a Registered Nurse Home Visitor for two and a half years. The Nurse Home Visits start during pregnancy, and continues until the child is 2 years old. During that time, mothers will schedule 64 Nurse Home Visits. The program helps moms have a healthy pregnancy, and give birth to a healthy baby. It also helps moms get referrals for support services such as child care, health care and job training.

To be eligible for the partnership, mother's must be pregnant with their first child, have a total household income lower than 185% federal poverty level, and be 25 weeks pregnant or less.

We need to spread the word about this excellent program! As a health care professional, my Mom always spoke about the need to "take charge" of your health, and I love that this program enables women to build the best health foundation for themselves and their babies. I hope you will join me in donating to YW with "Give $5. Take 5."

I hope you enjoy a lovely weekend with your families this weekend!http://alistbaby.net/
